Flowers Toxic to Dogs & Cats: A Pet-Safe Guide from Your Meridian Florist
As animal lovers ourselves (and decent human beings), we feel the stress of ordering and receiving flowers when it comes to fur baby households! As your personalized Meridian, Idaho florist and provider of trusted Boise, Idaho flower delivery, our mission is to understand your specific occasion and flower vision to bring it to life for a visual and aromatic surprise every time. BUT if you share your space with dog or cat babies, it’s important to know that some popular blooms used in floral arrangements can be harmful to pets.
⸻
Common Arrangement Flowers Toxic to Cats
If you share space with kitties, please avoid or take caution with the following stems:
• Lily – Extremely toxic to cats; even small exposure can cause kidney failure
• Tulip – Particularly the bulbs can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and in serious cases, heart problems or organ damage
• Daffodil – Can cause vomiting and digestive distress
• Chrysanthemum – May lead to drooling or stomach upset
If you order flower arrangements and have cats at home, we strongly recommend avoiding lilies altogether. We avoid all of these blooms in our arrangements unless specifically requested.
⸻
Flowers That Can Be Harmful to Dogs
While dogs are often less sensitive than cats to live flowers, the following blooms can still pose risks to your dog:
• Sago Palm – Highly toxic and potentially fatal.
• Hyacinth - Ingestion can cause severe symptoms like drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, and in severe cases, increased heart rate and tremors.
• Tulip - gastrointestinal distress, including vomiting, diarrhea, and hypersalivation
• Daffodil - it can cause severe illness depending on the amount consumed and the dog's size.
Symptoms may include vomiting, lethargy, drooling, or loss of appetite. If ingestion is suspected, contact your veterinarian immediately.
